Google Doesn’t!

How’s that for a attention-grabbing headline??!! But it’s an interesting doesn’t, so thought it deserves to be here.

Ladies ‘n gentlemen, lads ‘n lasses, Google Docs & Spreadsheets doesn’t support Opera! Here’s what the page says:

Sorry, but this browser does not support web word-processing.

We recommend you try Google Docs & Spreadsheets on:
Mozilla FireFox: 1.0.5 or higher
Mozilla SeaMonkey: 1.0 or higher
Internet Explorer: 6.0 or higher
All of these are FREE and easy to download and use.

If you are working to fix problems with a specific browser and would like to bypass this check, just add &browserok=true to the end of the Google Docs & Spreadsheets url.

Please note that it is a violation of intergalactic law to use this parameter under false pretenses, so don’t let us catch you at it.

And, it won’t work very well — really.

So what, you ask? I’ll have you know that I’ve embarked on a profound journey of discovery - which web-browser will I call my own in the coming days! The answer will have monumental consequences I assure you…. so what if I have to use IE for some of the online tools that I use, its just the ‘other browser’!! A rather fine one at that, but I’ve formed the impression that its a bit of a resource-hog….. but, but, the whole story some other time perhaps…. at this time I have Firefox, Seamonkey, IE7 and Opera all installed, and sometimes running together while I peer intently into the process-monitor. :o)

Incidentally, Seamonkey is the up-to-date avatar of the erstwhile Netscape Communicator, which reached the end of its development with ver.4.7x many, many moons ago. Netscape was my first-ever browser and e-mail client, so I’d continued with it for e-mail till quite recently when I switched to Thunderbird. Maintained by an enthusiast community I understand, which makes it so mind-boggling - the application is quite amazing!

That’s that for the first despatch from the browser battleground….. more later, perhaps….
