Rhythm Online…
It gives me great pleasure to share a recent and serendipitous discovery - that Rhythm House of Kalaghoda finally has an online presence. For an aging and long-standing Bombayite like me the delight comes from multiple dimensions; for starters, I’ve been visiting and purchasing from Rhythm House for over 2-decades now (I said aging, didn’t I?!!), i.e. from the late 80s of the last century. Those were the times when audio-cassettes were new-tech, hip, fashionable and not entirely affordable, and LP records still available. As a matter of fact, a lot of music, particularly Indian classical music was available only on LP records.
And Rhythm House used to have listening cubicles, where you could take in an armful of LPs and spend as much time as you wanted listening before you bought….. I have pleasant, if now blurry memories of time spent in those listening rooms…. where I cultivated an ear for Indian classical music. The stimulus, as in most of these matters was a woman - and this young lady (as young as I was then!) was an Indian classical music afficionado! Ah well, but now I’m digressing, as is the wont of the elderly… :o)
I’d approached Rhythm House nearly a decade ago, as an aspiring Internet-entrepreneur, though of rather doubtful credentials. I imagine that this may have also been the time that the next generation of the family-owners were beginning to take over the running of the business. I wasn’t able to inspire them to go online and life went on. The listening rooms had vanished a little earlier to my regret and bitter chagrin - I felt that the place was getting mercenary, as everything else and for some years, I stopped frequenting the place.
Time heals all things, idealistic notions repair faster than most things, and now I’m a ’somewhat-familiar’ at Rhythm House. And yet, its only a few weeks ago that I found that they’ve gone online. I’d posted sometime ago about how they’d switched from plastic bags to paper, and then back again, and I’m almost certain that I’d not found the site then. But that could’ve been for any reason, suffice it for now that you can wander the catalogue online now…. which is the other reason for delight - you can’t rest your legs in the shop, and after an hour of browsing, this causes me grief! :o)
A bit of a ramble eh, just to share a hyperlink? But I’m willing and eager to listen to your Rhythm House story in return. Happy wandering!
