At last….?

Priyadarshini Mattoo’s killer is to be sentenced on October-30, 2006. Considering that the rape and murder took place on January-23, 1996, it would be an understatement to call this a case of justice delayed.

But considering that the trial court had set the prime accused Santosh Singh free in December-1999, saying words to the effect that “though I know he is the man who committed the crime, I acquit him, giving him the benefit of the doubt”, I agree with the Delhi HC judges who have said, “by acquitting the respondent despite being convinced that there was no doubt in the prosecution case, the trial court has mauled justice, its decision has shocked the judicial conscience of this court.”
