I think we can be partners with her and begin to do worship her lovingly with our lust feelings for her and iam sure she will bless us more as that will connect us to her more intimately and strongly she will respond to us more.

thanks unni, very pertinent input. but how do you reconcile temple eroticism, the kama sutra and the far more relaxed and broader acceptance of sexuality to having to modify the kali myths to make it more acceptable to children? :o)

across cultures, goddess worship which goes back to antiquity; yet in how many religions today do you find the female principle worshiped? and thus the view that the myths were re-written to make them more patriarchal, to do away with the discomfort of having a woman on top!

you may be interested to know that among the shakta literature of bengal, there's a legend about how krishna is a manifestation of kali! and more interestingly, radha is a manifestation of siva - who requests this, so that in this fashion he could be on top of kali!! this way, believers of either deity could worship the other with as much fervor. check out this image from the british library!

I agree. you generally don't associate Kali with moods like docility and emotions like shame. but this variations between the tantric versions and the 'tradational' versions of these stories and myths have always been there. i suppose the tantric versions have so much more deeper (baser?) emotions being addressed, which may not be typical reading for children maybe? for that matter i am always surprised when i come across people who worship the shivalingam and do not know what it signifies. and when they are told, the first reaction is invariably disbelief. maybe simple faith works for many. ignorance is bliss sort of situation...
about the painting... looks striking.. good colours. and it tells the story very well.
cheers
